About Paul Bates - Management Speaker:
Paul Bates has been a leader and educator in the Canadian business community for more than two decades. He has extensive experience in the financial services industry, and is widely known as a prolific writer, broadcaster, and teacher.
In March of 2004 Mr. Bates was appointed to a five-year term as the dean of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He has served as a part-time member of faculty at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto in the Faculty of Marketing. In 2003 he received an Outstanding Teacher Award.
Following service on the boards of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Canadian Investment Dealers Association, in 2003 Bates was appointed as a part-time commissioner to the Ontario Securities Commission, the largest securities commission in Canada. He has held the president’s office at four major brokerage and investment firms, most recently at the helm of Charles Schwab Canada (later acquired by Bank of Nova Scotia). Under his stewardship, the concept of full-choice
investing and fee-based advisory services became leading themes in the Canadian investment industry. In fact, he was recognized by his peers when he was chosen as the Most Influential Broker of the Year by Investment Executive Magazine in 2000.
In 2002, Bates was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal for community service. This commemorative medal is awarded to Canadians who, over the past 50 years, have helped create the Canada of today. He is the board chair at the Canadian Psychiatric Research Foundation and lends time to Evangel Hall, a Toronto shelter for the homeless and working poor.
